Inductors and Transformers are fundamental building blocks in most electronics systems. PlanarMag’s Embedded Magnetics technology can be extended to a wide range of applications, including telecommunications, wireless, power conversion and electronic sensors. Our initial focus is on the large and growing Ethernet market, which shipped over 500 million ports last year. Each Ethernet port, connected to Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable requires a media filter, which consists of an number of isolations transformers and common mode filters. Critical specifications for the Ethernet media filter include:
- Channel attenuation and Insertion Loss (S21)
- Impedance mismatch and Return Loss (S11)
- Common Mode Rejection (CM)
- Impedance imbalance and Common-to-Differential Mode Conversion (CM-DM)
- Near End Crosstalk (NEXT)
- Alien Noise (Intra-pair Crosstalk and Radiated Emissions)
By utilizing RF simulation tools and photolithography techniques, PlanarMag can effectively manage the parasitic circuit elements that contribute to each of these performance requirements and significantly improve the performance across all parameters. Furthermore, the technology is conducive to integrating shielding for controlled EMI and vertical integration for higher package density.
Engineering Expertise
PlanarMag employs advanced manufacturing methods to produce embedded magnetics and set higher industry standards, both of which require a unique combination of expertise including communications system design, analog design, and electronic packaging. We provide a unique combination of expertise in communications system design, analog design, and electronic packaging. Our circuit designs, simulation tools and automated construction techniques minimize the parasitic elements which impact bandwidth and efficiency. The result is exceptional performance that is consistent from part-to-part.
- System Design — Successful development of a communications transceiver demands a thorough understanding of overall system design. The PlanarMag team has been developing components for Ethernet for the past 20 years and possess the knowledge, experience and tools needed to design products optimized for the Ethernet application. In developing products, we work closely with IC vendors, to address the system requirements and speed time-to-market.
- Analog Design — Unlike previous generations of magnetics, PlanarMag’s next-generation technology automatically controls parameters for tighter circuit tolerances. Ethernet product families integrate media filters into connectors as well as into modules. Our integration provides shorter interconnects to other passive and active components, improving signal integrity. The transformer and inductor windings can be designed as a transmission line, providing a higher degree of balance than can be achieved through manual construction.
- Electronic Packaging — Embedding magnetic components into a printed circuit requires not only layout expertise, but also extensive evaluation and characterization of materials. Packaging directly impacts the electrical characteristics of the circuit and material selection is used to control such parameters as voltage isolation, inductance, inter-winding capacitance and thermal stability. The technology is flexible and allows the integration of other passive and active components. Stacking and vertical integration is also possible, producing minimized form factors, reduce interconnect lengths and improved performance.
